IMACS caused me to grow more academically than any other educational institution I have attended. It taught me to engage deeply with logic and reasoning, not just robotically memorize like many other students do. I hope to encounter something like it again at Harvey Mudd!
Michael Colen from IMACS in 1st Grade to Harvey Mudd!
Michael’s journey with IMACS began in 1st grade. Over the years, he traversed the entire spectrum of IMACS programs, including math enrichment, computer programming enrichment, summer classes, university computer science, and AP® Computer Science A.
From 5th through 7th grade, he completed the Elements of Mathematics: Foundations (EMF) program as a part of the Broward County Public Schools’ partnership with IMACS. As an 8th grader, he earned an “A” in Calculus I through the University of Florida.
Michael’s transition to high school showcased his continued brilliance in both the sciences and the arts. He distinguished himself in leadership and artistic expression, serving as Secretary of the National Science Bowl club, Co-captain of the math team, and Vice President of Singers for Smiles (a club that performs concerts at nursing homes). His academic achievements included being an AP Scholar with distinction and a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist. As a pianist, he captivated audiences in the FMEA all-state symphonic band, receiving a Superior with Distinction in an FBA solo.
Michael scored a perfect 36 on the ACT and an 800 on the Math 1 and 2 on the SAT, and finished high school with a 4.92 weighted (4.29 unweighted) GPA.
Michael plans to pursue a degree in Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College, where he received the Harvey S. Mudd Merit Award.
